The understanding of the Tribal customs and traditions is often ignored in Tribal Courts. We fought to bring our granddaughters custody case to Tribal Court from State Court only to be treated worse by the Tribal Court than we were in State Court. We were even threatened with not being able to see our granddaughter any more by a Tribal Judge. The non-native father was awarded custody even though he abandoned our granddaughter for the first two years of her life. Better training should be demanded of Tribal Court Justices. I have seen in our case as well as others blatant disregard for Indian families.
