University of Oklahoma Indian Law Conference

Norman — The University of Oklahoma College of Law, American Indian Law Review and OU Native American Studies Department is hosting its third annual symposium.  This year’s “Tribal Sovereignty: A Global Perspective” symposium will highlight the issues indigenous peoples face at the international and regional levels.  This includes the ability of indigenous peoples to assert their rights at the United Nations and the Organization of American States, in addition to the ability of tribes to engage economically on an international level.

“Woven into the fabric of the College, Native American Law is central to our strategic vision and an integral part of our curriculum.  It is truly our privilege to host extraordinary world leaders to highlight significant issues facing indigenous peoples,” said Dean Joe Harroz.

The morning session will feature keynote speaker George Tiger, Principal Chief, Muscogee (Creek) Nation; Dr. James Collard, Director of Planning and Economic Development, Citizen Potawatomie Nation; and an OU Native American Studies Council of Fire.

 

The afternoon session will feature keynote speaker Jose Francisco Calí Tzay (Maya Kaqchikel), Chairperson, United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination; Professor Dinah Shelton, George Washington University Law School, and former member, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights and Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples; Armstrong Wiggins (Miskito), Director, Washington, D.C. office, Indian Law Resource Center; Neha Sheth, Attorney-Adviser, Office of the Legal Adviser, U.S. Department of State; and Professor Dieter Dörr, Johannes-Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany.

 

Participants will also have the opportunity to view the James T. Bialac Native American Art Collection, one of the most important private collections of Native American art in the United States, which are displayed throughout the OU College of Law.  Entertainment will include Native American musicians.

 

The Symposium will be held Thursday, February 27th from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at The University of Oklahoma College of Law located at 300 W. Timberdell, Norman, OK.  Registration is free and includes breakfast and lunch.  This programming has been approved by the OBA to receive 3.5 hours of CLE credit for $25.  Registration is open to students, tribal members, attorneys, and public.
