Steve York, my friend, “Red” is more appropriate, considering the thievery and indiscriminate slaughter of old men, woman, and children committed during the 1864 Sand Creek Massacre. Particularly when a First Lieutenant of the 1st Infantry, New Mexico Volunteers; Testified that on; “one instance a child of a few months old being thrown in the feed-box of a wagon, and after being carried some distance, left on the ground to perish“. The Lieutenant also testified that; “There was also numerous instances in which men had cut out the private parts of females, and stretched them over the saddle-bows, and wore them over their hats, while riding in the ranks“, all for the sake of manifest destiny. Green will hold the guilty parties responsible and accountable.
I visited my ancestors at the site of the Sand Creek and could visually, see the landscape of the fleeing families to take cover in the creekbed of the Sandy Creek. There was no place to hide and people had to dig a hole to basically, keep from getting hit by the howitzers or cannons fired by the Chivington killers. It was an undeniable annihilation of my people. Then, the US govt is trying to say that what reparations were brought about at the Treaty of the Little Arkansas were given to the Cheyenne/Arapaho and Apache people which is wrong. The government does not show any accounting for the dispicable act on our people. I am hopeful after the apology given by the Governor Hickenhooper of the State of Colorado that they will finally, realize that a true injustice was committed on the families of the Cheyenne/Arapaho et al.
